Atlantic Starr started in 1976 in White Plains, New York by three brothers: David, Wayne and Jonathan Lewis who were the lead singer/guitarist, lead singer/keyboardist and trombonist/percussionist respectively. The brothers then hired lead singer Sharon Bryant, trumpeter William Sudderth, saxophonist Damon Rentie, bassist Clifford Archer, drummer Porter Carroll, Jr. and percussionist/flutist Joseph Phillips to complete the group's original nine-person lineup. The group started performing around the northeastern portions of the United States and after two years, scored a deal with A&M. The group began working with producer/songwriter Bobby Eli who helped them put out their self-titled debut album in 1978.
